Do we need AI governance if we only use off-the-shelf tools? Yes. Off-the-shelf AI tools still process your data, influence your decisions, and create your regulatory exposure. Governance must cover vendor-hosted AI — including data retention terms, training data usage, and what happens when the vendor changes the model.
What does POPIA require for AI specifically? POPIA does not mention AI explicitly, but its principles apply directly: lawful processing, purpose limitation, data minimisation, and the right to object to automated decision-making. Any AI system that processes personal information must satisfy these conditions — and the organisation must be able to demonstrate compliance.
Is responsible AI governance just a compliance exercise? No. Compliance is the minimum.
